Edinburgh is situated, surprisingly, on top of what used to be a series of volcanoes. Split into two "areas", the Old Town and the New Town, the population total is currently less than half a million.

Probably the most famous part of Edinburgh is The Royal Mile which links Edinburgh Castle and the Palace of Holyroodhouse. Although called the Royal Mile the actual distance is one mile and 107 yards from entrance to gates.

Edinburgh is famous for holding two main festival events each year; the Military Tattoo and the Fringe Festival. The Fringe Festival started in 1951 and from a very small beginning has grown to a large scale theatre festival. In previous years there have been about 500 groups from around the world, performing in about 200 venues. In 2001 the Fringe Festival was held from the 5th to the 27th of August. A progamme of events is usually available in early June.
